Comprehensive Health and Genetic Testing in Wirehaired Vizslas

At Pivot Kennels, we prioritize the health and longevity of the Wirehaired Vizsla breed. We are passionate and picky! Before making breeding decisions, we conduct thorough health and genetic testing to ensure we are pairing dogs that will produce healthy, well-structured, and genetically diverse litters. In addition, personalities are evaluated—most hunting dogs are also family dogs and must be a calm, gentle, and sociable family companion.

The Role of Genetic Testing in Breeding Decisions

A significant part of our breeding decisions involves analyzing the pedigree and running a Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) assessment between two potential breeding dogs. COI measures the level of inbreeding, helping us maintain genetic diversity and avoid hereditary health issues. We utilize an amazing database, vizsladatabase.com , to help us with researching breeding dog compatibility. Additionally, we test for specific genetic traits and health markers to ensure compatibility between breeding pairs.

Non-Carrier, Carrier, and Affected Dogs

Non-Carrier: Dogs without the genetic mutation and who will not pass it on to offspring.
Carrier: Dogs carrying one copy of a mutation but not affected by the condition. Breeding carriers responsibly with non-carriers ensures no affected puppies.
Affected: Dogs with two copies of a mutation who will develop the condition. Ethical breeding practices aim to prevent affected offspring.

Details of the Genetic Testing :

HUU

This is not a life-threatening condition. Dogs can be N/N (meaning they are Non-carriers), N/HUU (meaning they are carriers), or HUU/HUU (meaning they are affected dogs). We have several HUU carriers in the kennel. When we are looking at breeding one of our carriers, we make sure to find a stud that is a non-carrier. This means puppies could be carriers (not affecting their health) or non-carriers.

ECLE

This is a life-threatening and debilitating condition. This was found in our breed with the work between one of our puppy families, a dog dermatologist at UPenn, and us. We alerted our club and other breeders upon a definite genetic diagnosis in September 2023. We have made a decision in our kennel to not keep any carriers of this genetic disorder.

Furnishings

Furnishings, we believe, are important to test for as it gives us more information about our breed and breeding decisions. We have bred and will continue to do so F/f dogs to F/f dogs as a f/f pup doesn’t have any detrimental health defects, just an improper coat. Once the genetics of our breed become more diverse with solid, proven dogs, perhaps we can move away from this.

Here are what all the furnishing genetics may correlate to coat type:

Kolibri is a F/F dog. Typically, our observations are that F/F dogs have a double coat with a softer coat that needs to be stripped out for a proper coat. We observe a much thicker coat with thicker beard/facial furnishings and more leg and underbelly furnishings.

Both Zolna and Gemenc have F/f. We see a wide range of coats that come from F/f. Typically, less furnishings on the face and body. However, there are usually far fewer grooming needs. Zolna has had very little grooming, and Gemenc gets stripped once per year.

A f/f produces a smooth-coated, wirehaired vizsla. It can be very difficult to tell looking at a puppy if it’s f/f or F/f, so if we have a litter with F/f x F/f parents, we will genetically test to see if we have an f/f pups. The dog is still genetically, temperamentally, and size/structure wise a wirehaired vizsla but they will not develop their furnishings or any wirehairs. We would say this is not a standard wirehaired vizsla but there is nothing wrong with this and some hunters, especially, in warmer climates, may prefer this.

Longhair Gene

Longhair is generally misclassified as length of coat; however, it is about the TEXTURE of the coat.

Kolibri (above) is s/s and F/F. We know she is not a Longhair carrier but still a fully furnished wirehaired vizsla.

Zolna (above) is s/L (longhair carrier) and F/f. He has a properly furnished coat with the right texture.

Above is an example of L/L puppy. These longhair pups have a soft coat, meaning it will need to be brushed and clipped not handstripped. It is a coat that has a similar texture to a setter. These pups may also be F/f meaning they have wirehair as well. These still have the soft, setter type coat. There hasn’t been enough investigation into a Longhair if they can be properly stripped. There are many spaniel and setter owners/groomers that handstrip these breeds who have soft coats. Could these coats be handstripped, currently there isn’t enough information on if this is possible.

Choosing Reliable Genetic Testing

Previously, we conducted individual trait testing through university labs, but we now utilize AKC Health + DNA Testing , which screens for 328 genetic markers and traits in a single, comprehensive test. This approach is more economical and provides extensive insights into our dogs’ genetics. Direct vs. Indirect Genetic Testing: Why It Matters

Many at-home dog DNA tests advertise breed identification, but not all tests are created equal. It's essential to differentiate between direct and indirect genetic testing:

What We Learned About Improving Our Dog's Diet

Feeding our dogs the right diet is an important part of being responsible pet owners. We have been feeding our dogs Taste of the Wild and Victor and adding a few toppers like carrots or eggs. But when we read the book “The Forever Dog,” we realized that making a few simple changes to their diet could have a big impact on their health. After implementing these changes, we have seen amazing results—our dog Quill no longer engages in coprophagia (poop eating). We have also seen a reduction of grass eating or any extra skin or paw licking in our other dogs! Here’s what we learned about improving our dogs’ diets:

Our journey towards healthier nutrition for our four-legged friends began in earnest with “The Forever Dog,” a book by veterinarian Dr. Karen Shaw Becker and Rodney Habib. This book provides in-depth information on how to extend your dog's life using natural remedies and whole-food nutrition. This book has scientifically based data and advice. Many of its sources are from peer-reviewed scientific studies. Most importantly, it is not funded by one of the big dog food corporations (Mars, Nestle Purina, General Mills, JM Smucker, and Hills Science)! It is reassuring that most of the applicable diet advice is from reliable, non-biased sources! As soon as we read it, we knew that we wanted to try out some of the advice and see if it improved the quality of life for our pups.

BASICS

Dog Crate

Even if you plan on sleeping with your puppy in your bed, having a crate is still important. Anytime your dog needs to be boarded, or stay at the vet, or groomed (or insert many situations), they will encounter a crate or need to be in a crate. If your dog is unfamiliar with crates, this could be very stressful or even harmful to your dog. Your best case scenario is to crate train your puppy.

There are many methods to crate train your puppy, such as sleeping with the crate right next to the bed and resting your hand on the crate when your puppy starts to whine. Or the method of putting the crate across the house in the kitchen or laundry room and setting an alarm to get up to take the puppy potty. Or all the methods in between. Do what is right for your family and the puppy. Generally, it will only take a couple of weeks to crate train your pup, but that gives you the peace of mind when you need to leave the house and crate a still teething (and chewing-on-everything) puppy.

Bowls

Here are two options: regular stainless steel bowls and an elevated set. Elevated bowls can prevent sliding or stop paddling out the water in bowls. Elevated bowls can alleviate neck strain or arthritis as well; there are no studies that support or deny elevated bowls preventing bloat. So, it is truly personal preference.

Stainless Steel Dog Bowls: We like the 6-cup or larger bowls; the rubber backing helps keep them as non-slip. Stainless steel is easier to keep clean and sanitary.

Nail Care

We started with one dog on the nail clipper but found the dremel to be more useful and easier to use when keeping the nails on our dogs a healthy length. We use a different Dremel model only because we also use the Dremel for household projects.

Any nail tool you use, you need to desensitize your puppy to it. The first 6 months, you should be playing with your puppy's feet A LOT—feeling its paws, its pads, lightly pressing or tugging on their nails. (same with ears, mouth, and tail!). We still "inspect" our dog's feet, ears, mouth, tail, and belly, really any body part—as we want them to be conditioned to it for vet visits and showing.

Whatever tool you use, when you do eats, leave it right next to the bowl. Then start playing with pups feet while they eat. If you use a dremel, start turning it on when they are eating and eventually have it running next to their feet while they eat (this sometimes needs to be built up by starting farther away and gradually coming closer).

You can use the sandpaper bit, but those can get hot (especially when we are dremeling multiple dog’s nails). We use a diamond bit that is a concave shape. Here is a simple diamond bit that is available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3wWyf4J /

Leash and Collar

We use smooth leather slip collars on our dogs for everyday life. The double rings allow you to clip your leash so it is either a slip or a loose collar. When you take your puppy home, the best way to keep track of your pup and for it to learn to pay attention to you is to keep it on a leash in the house. Attach the pup to you and start the learning process of your puppy needing to watch you for direction. This establishes an important relationship! (more to come on this in another blog post!)

There are so many toy choices! These dogs love fetch and playing. There are a variety of balls and toys you can get—have fun picking them out! Below are some of the suggestions for puppies and some chews for adult dogs.

BASICS

Training Bumpers

A plain canvas bumper is a great way to start your fetch training with your new pup or even an older dog. You can also buy some pheasant wings; once your pup reliably fetches the bumper to you, you can start tying some wings around the bumper. Start with one wing and work up with more. This helps get your pup used to feathers in their mouth. The large rabbit bumper is good for getting them the feel of fur in their mouth, and if you plan on doing any tracking training, this is a great tool! The pheasant bumper is larger and gets your dog used to holding larger and heavier things in their mouth.

These are training tools; only get these out for training sessions and not everyday play!

Buffalo Whistle

This double-sided whistle is a great tool in the field. The high-pitched side, we use a double blow (short, long) as a come and a short blow as a directional command, and then the ball whistle side is a stop command. All of these commands can be taught in your yard!

Check Cord

This is a great training tool, even for those not planning on hunting. Great to helping puppies to come and young dogs that will come but not come directly to you. Also useful for hunting training for whoa or backing. Endless possibilities with this tool!

We prefer the wider, flat silicone type cord versus the rope or other material. We also strongly recommend NOT getting one with a hand loop, as this gets caught on vegetation when they are running in a field. The silicone is easy to clean and doesn't tangle as easily.

BASICS

Shampoo

Wirehairs coats naturally have oils. These help give it the protective layer that helps water roll off and keeps debris at bay (of a groomed wire coat). Rarely do these dogs need a bath or shower. With all our dogs in the house, we typically go months without giving baths. This shampoo helps keep the natural oils and texture of your wirehair. Yes, it's a bit pricey, but when you need 3 or 4 baths a year, it lasts!

Ear Cleaners

WHV have floppy ears and should be checked regularly (weekly at minimum). If we notice anything starting, we gently wipe our dog's ears with these wipes. If there is something more serious starting, DO NOT use a Q-tip on your dog's ears. Get a medicated liquid to drop in, gently rub, and use these wipes or a soft cotton wipe to clean excess liquid from the exterior of the ear.

Clotting Powder

This is a must! This helps stop small wounds from bleeding by helping them clot. If you clip a nail too short or your dog shakes its head and catches its ear on something, you can sprinkle this on to stem the bleeding. Very helpful for those little scratches that bleed profusely. This will not work on wounds that require a vet's attention, nor should it be used on those wounds.

Grooming Tools

Why is this under the Health section? A wire's coat, when properly maintained, protects their skin and keeps out the water, dirt, and debris. The dead, soft wirehair can trap these against the skin, causing infections. Check out an early blog post dedicated entirely to the topic!

*We DO NOT recommend the furminator. This tool more often than not cuts the coat or scratches your dog's skin if improperly used.

Paw Protection—Musher's Wax

We live where it gets cold...really cold. When our winter days hit 0 and below (most of winter), walks can be tough on our dog's feet. We put this on our dog's pads and work it up between their toes. It helps with pad cracking and stopping those balls of ice/snow from forming between their pads.

Additives to Dog Food

There are many additives you can mix in with your dog's food. In fact, there is a very good book below (Forever Dog) that gives you the science behind what is good and why. If you had to get one item right now, we would suggest salmon oil. It is full of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and great for heart and immune health, skin and coat health, along with anti-inflammatory properties. This one is more expensive than some alternatives but has better quality ingredients.

Bitter Apple Spray

This was the only item I wasn't sure how to categorize! This is a spray that tastes really bad to dogs (usually). You can spray this on furniture, shoes, curtains, or anything your teething pup keeps chewing on when they shouldn't. This does work most of the time. We have had one puppy that didn't seem to care if it was on anything, but all our other pups, this was magical! You can also find this at most dog supply stores.

Grooming The Wirehaired Vizsla

GROOMING WIREHAIRED VIZSLAS

(AND THEIR COAT TYPES)

A question we get often, "What is the Wirehaired Vizsla's coat like and how do you groom them?"

It is not as harsh of a wirehair as a GWP, nor is it a soft coat, but still a pleasant, coarse coat to pet and groom. Coat type in a wirehaired vizsla can be short, medium, thick and long. I put in thick as there are some coats that need monthly grooming (like a thick but not necessarily a long coat) and some coats only need grooming one or two times per year. Some hunting wirehairs that are very active, rarely need to be stripped as their soft wirehair is stripped naturally from briars, brush, brambles, or branches.

Delceg has a short harsh coat - needs grooming 1x/year

Ernie has a thick medium coat and needs grooming every 3-4 months

Wirehair has 4 life cycles. When the dog has never been stripped, all the hair on the dog is at the end of its life cycle (all soft and dead). When you strip this type of dog you end up with a bald looking dog as there are no hairs in the first 3 cycles of their life. Dog owners don't always understand this and will freak out - your dog will grow his wirehair back! All you need to do is maintain his healthy coat once it grows in.

Quill: 1 yr old, never been stripped, very soft, and more blond than red

Quill: After a being stripped for the first time (took 2 weeks of hand stripping)

Quill: 6 months after initial stripping with maintained coat. More red, course, and manageable.

To groom a wirehair, you want to strip the dead (soft, sometimes blond) wirehair from the coat with your fingers, stripping tool (such as the Furminator) or stripping knives. (Blog Post to come on different grooming tools!) We prefer using our fingers or stripping knives. Each coat may require different stripping knives. A stripping knife that works on a medium coat may not work on a short coat. NEVER cut a wirehair’s coat! The purpose of a wirehaired coat is to protect your wirehair’s skin from the environment and regulate temperature. A good wirehair coat protects them from burs, twigs, prickers, sharp grass when hunting. When the coat is cut, the wirehairs cut doesn’t leave room for the new wirehairs to grow in. When cut, the coat can become soft, curly, or frizzy and hand stripping can become painful.

An ungroomed or cut wirehair coat creates a coat that isn’t healthy for the dog. Without a proper coat or grooming, wirehairs can develop what appears to be skin allergies or sores due to poor or lack of grooming. Matting can occur causing sores or moisture/debris gets trapped in the soft undercoat causing skin conditions.

If you are not committed to grooming your wirehairs coat properly; you could find a professional groomer for the care of your wirehair. When looking for a groomer, interview them to make sure they know how to groom a wirehair coat. We hope that understanding proper grooming of a wirehair coat helps you decide if this is the right breed for you.

Here are also some tips for grooming your wirehair:

Strip a dirty dog! A freshly bathed wirehair doesn’t have the grip or oils to assist you with proper stripping. When our dogs need baths (not often!) that’s when I know I should see if any of them need a quick grooming session.
Start with a good brushing or use a shedding comb.
Use of a shedding comb against the grain is ok, never use a stripping knife against the grain.
Use a furminator next or larger carving stripping knife. It is up to preference. I prefer stripping knives, hey are less expensive than a furminator (you can get 2-4 stripping knives for the price of one furminator).
If you use a carving knife, run it parallel on the body against the skin to strip out the soft wirehair.
You can strip a very soft wirehair face - be gentle, if the hair is not coming out with gentle pulls, then it's not ready. Use your fingers to hand strip when you are around the face.
For legs or harder to reach places you can use a small, detail stripping knife or hand strip.
To assist with hand stripping you can get a rubber finger tip cover.
